Drag Sunday Productions was born on January 7, 2018, with the debut of It’s a Drag Sunday. At a time when the Victoria drag scene was constrained by limited opportunities for performers, the show became a space for performers to bring their full selves to the stage. Created by the community, for the community, It’s a Drag Sunday provided a stage where artists could push boundaries, evoke emotions, and celebrate their craft and explore new ideas. It quickly became a beacon for drag performers seeking to showcase their unfiltered creativity. Originally produced by Shelita Cox and Robin Wood. Which ran weekly for over five years, the longest running series of drag shows known to Victoria.
Despite the challenge of hosting an 11:30 PM show on a Sunday, It’s a Drag Sunday defied the bizarre time with overwhelming success. The service industry, whose "Friday night" often fell on Sundays, embraced the show, contributing to its unique cult following. Fans affectionately called it "church," a sacred and joyous tradition to kick off their weekends. Over time, Drag Sunday developed its own lore, like the creation of #gayterror from eye-witness accounts of provocative scenes on stage. Drag Sunday hosting unforgettable performances from future Drag Race franchisee stars like Ilona Verley, Molly Poppinz, and JIMBO.
The resounding success of Drag Sunday inspired its evolution into Drag Sunday Productions, a registered business that formalized its operations. This step ensured financial clarity and elevated the brand's professionalism while staying true to its original mission: to provide a stage for performers of all levels to share their art. Drag Sunday Productions prioritized community, collaboration, and sustainable growth, ensuring a nurturing environment for performers to thrive and audiences to connect.
After its bi-weekly launch, Drag Sunday quickly transitioned to a weekly event, becoming a pillar of Victoria’s drag and queer culture. Following an emotional farewell on May 31, 2023, Drag Sunday Productions continued to innovate, producing standout shows like the all-drag cast to the Rocky Horror Picture Show in 2022 and participating in esteemed festivals such as the Victoria Fringe Festival and Outstages Festival.
