About Drag Sunday Productions

A Reclamation of Drag as Art

Drag Sunday Productions was born on January 7, 2018, with the debut of It’s a Drag Sunday. At a time when the Victoria drag scene was constrained by limited opportunities for performers, the show became a bold reclaiming of drag as a true performance art. Created by the community and for the community, It’s a Drag Sunday provided a stage where artists could push boundaries, evoke emotions, and celebrate their craft. It quickly became a beacon for drag performers seeking to showcase their unfiltered creativity. Originally produced by Shelita Cox and Robin Wood. Now is the longest running Drag Show series in Victoria BC.

Crafting a Cult Following

Despite the challenge of hosting an 11:30 PM show on a Sunday—a time slot available due to venue constraints—It’s a Drag Sunday defied expectations. The service industry, whose "Friday night" often fell on Sundays, embraced the show, contributing to its unique cult following. Fans affectionately called it "church," a sacred and joyous tradition of their weekends. Over time, Drag Sunday developed its own lore, with unforgettable performances from future Drag Race franchisee stars like Ilona Verley and, JIMBO.

A Professional Leap Forward

The resounding success of Drag Sunday inspired its evolution into Drag Sunday Productions, a registered business that formalized its operations. This step ensured financial clarity and elevated the brand's professionalism while staying true to its original mission: to provide a stage for performers of all levels to share their art. Drag Sunday Productions prioritized community, collaboration, and growth, ensuring a nurturing environment for performers to thrive and audiences to connect.

Milestones and Evolution

After its bi-weekly launch, Drag Sunday quickly transitioned to a weekly event, becoming a cornerstone of Victoria’s drag culture. Following an emotional farewell on May 31, 2023, Drag Sunday Productions continued to innovate, producing standout shows like the all-drag cast Rocky Horror in 2024 and participating in esteemed festivals such as the Victoria Fringe Festival and Outstages Festival.

Key productions include:

  • 2022 An All Drag Cast: Rocky Horror Paying Homage to the late Shelita Buffet's all drag cast Rocky Horror show that had took place years prior, a resurgance in queer culture,
  • 2023 Fringe Pop-Up: Featuring alumni Honey Demwe and Ket Bush, celebrating the legacy of Drag Sunday.
  • 2023 An All Drag Cast: Rocky Horror  now becoming an annual must-see event, moving on from the nightclub to Drag Sunday Productions first in-house produced theatre show.
  • 2024 Outstages Premiere: Incest’la’vie, a fully scripted performance that set the stage for future storytelling projects.
  • 2024 An All Drag Cast: Rocky  Becoming bigger and Bigger Rocky Horror has moved from the Roxy Theatre to Metro Studio Theatre, where cast, crew, set, wigs, wardrobe, props have grown 10 fold.
  • Drag Through Time: A time-traveling drag odyssey that debuted at the 2024 Fringe and featured at the 2025 Outstages Festival, starring Shelita Cox, Henrietta Dubet, Aria Okay, and J Bird McLaughlin.

Reincarnation as CHURCH

On November 8, 2024, Drag Sunday reincarnated as CHURCH, a new drag series hosted at The Vicious Poodle. With shows on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Friday nights of the month, CHURCH honors the legacy of Drag Sunday while creating fresh opportunities for performers and audiences alike.

Drag Sunday Productions remains committed to fostering creativity, building community, and celebrating the queer arts. Whether producing groundbreaking performances or holding space for emerging artists, the heart of Drag Sunday Productions beats for the love of drag and the vibrant communities it inspires.
